The first time I ever saw his face it was wet, almost dew-kissed river water. He looked like some ancient maritime god, so staggeringly good looking it took what little breath I had left away. His face hovered over mine for a second and I realized I was in love. For the first time in my dark, dismal world I felt love. His inner radiance filled us both and seemed to make the very world around them shimmer and shine.

The overwhelming concern that he held in his amazing passion-filled eyes captivated me in their honesty; he had saved my life and seemed awed by my vulnerability. Or was I dead? Surely this was an angel divine. Nothing on this earth could compare to his looks. Shining beads of water were dripping from his dark, curly hair and I felt  jealously toward it for being able to touch those ebony locks.

I did not move, but could distinctly hear the booming of my heart and my continued gasping for air. My lips tingled where he had touched me and his arms cradled me in their searing warmth. We were here together this angel of mine, and I such an undeserving soul that I feared breaking the breathtaking beauty of this moment. It was so perfect and so utterly fragile because of it. I could leave this world right now and always feel the heaven in his arms.

He was so incredibly handsome, with a deep-tan that seemed to radiate in its perfection. His eyes seemed to pierce through my body into the very heart of my soul. Surely only an angel could do that. I must have died in the car accident; dimly I remembered striking this angel I struck with my car. He should be dead. So he must be an angel. It was the only explanation, he’d instantly become an angel since he radiated purity and I was the soul he’d accidentally saved. Any minute the devil would show up and claim his due.

I knew my heart had beaten several times but I hadn’t sensed blinking once. If I blinked, he would be gone. My mind knew I had to be alive and I didn’t want to be. If being dead meant being with this model of what men should be then I want to be dead. But if I reveal I’m alive then my angel would shoot straight up into heaven to spend eternity wrapped in his perfection and I would be sent straight to hell. If I ever had to live without this incredible being in my life, it would be the very definition of the eternal fires. I would be damned. None can compare to a god.

He turned and looked toward the river, where my favorite Porsche was becoming fish food. I followed his gaze and couldn’t even well up an ounce of desire to look at the car. My eyes couldn’t leave his face. The sun caught the water on his bronzed skin and made him seem all the more unearthly. I gasped and he turned back to me. I was enraptured.

That was the first time I saw Clark Kent.

The first time I saw him, I loved him. Despite how hard I’ve fought it and done everything and everyone to forget him, I still love him. Even if he hates me, I will always love him. No one will take that moment away from me and I shall treasure it for all eternity. It was fated for us and one day we shall claim our destiny together, whether in this life or the next.

And no matter the distance between us, or how the years roll by I can’t help remembering day in and day out, breath in, breath out…the first time ever I saw his face.

Inspired by Roberta Flack – The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love,
To the dark and the empty skies.

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
And felt your heart beat close to mine
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command.

And the first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy would fill the earth
And last till the end of time my love
It would last till the end of time my love

The first time ever I saw your face, your face,
your face, your face
